No matter what kind of aid you are looking for, it all starts with the FAFSA or TASFA. We know these can seem overwhelming, but we're here to help you with everything from filling out the FAFSA to applying for extra aid, understanding eligibility, meeting deadlines, and tips to get the most financial help. Let’s get started on your path to funding your education!

5 Essentials to Complete the FAFSA

Completing the FAFSA is pretty straightforward. But it does require specific documents and records. By preparing these items in advance, you can streamline the process and make filling out the FAFSA a breeze.
  1. San Jac FAFSA Code

    San Jac’s FAFSA Code is 003609.
    List San Jac and any other schools you’re applying to on the FAFSA. You can do this before you even apply to San Jac. We’ll receive your FAFSA results automatically once your financial aid application is processed.

  2. Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID)

    The FSA ID confirms your identity when you access your financial aid information and electronically sign FSA documents. You can create your FSA ID before you begin your FAFSA, in fact we recommend it! It can take up to three days after creating your ID to be able to use it.

  3. Social Security Number or Eligible Non-Citizen Documentation

    If you’re a US citizen, have your social security number handy. If you are a non-citizen, you may need your visa or other documentation.

  4. Your Driver's License

    This only applies if you have a driver’s license. Don’t worry about this item if you don’t have one.

  5. FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX)

    The FA-DDX eliminates the need for most applicants (and their spouse or parents) to self-report their income and tax information reported to the IRS. Also, federal tax information (FTI) that is transferred via the FA-DDX to the FAFSA form is considered verified for Title IV purposes.

Texas Financial Aid

Unable to apply for federal aid? Fill out the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). We use the TASFA to offer:

  • TPEG for dual credit students
  • TPEG for foreign students
  • TPEG for Continuing and Professional Development (CPD) students
  • Six percent of all student tuition is set aside to fund the TPEG Program

Note: If you’ve completed the FAFSA, you do not need to complete the TASFA.

Make sure to first submit your TASFA, then find the appropriate Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) application below.

TPEG Undocumented Fund Application

Submit the virtual application, then submit the TASFA application to the campus.

TPEG Dual Credit Fund Application

  • Check with the Dual Credit Office to see how your exemptions will be posted to your account.
  • Submit the virtual TPEG application and then submit the TASFA application to the campus.

TPEG International Student Fund Application

  • Meet with the Coordinator for International Student Services. Contact 281-998-6350 ext. 3891 or international.services@sjcd.edu.
  • Submit the virtual TPEG application then submit the TASFA application to the campus. 

TPEG Continuing and Professional Development Fund

  • Meet with Continuing and Professional Development about what courses are eligible for the CPD TPEG award. Contact 281-478-2786 or email her at registration.cpd@sjcd.edu.
  • Submit the virtual TPEG application then submit the TASFA application to the campus. 

Mark Your Calendar

The FAFSA for San Jac opens by December 2024. For priority consideration, you should apply as soon as it is available. While we award on a first-come-first-serve basis, funds for most financial aid programs are awarded based on financial need.

Summer Terms

  • April 30 - Priority processing deadline. All financial aid applications and necessary paperwork must be received by San Jac to guarantee a financial aid award by summer payment deadlines.
  • May 1 - Financial Aid will begin authorizing your aid and applying it to your tuition and fees.
  • May 8 - Any funds available after tuition and fees are paid will be moved to the bookstore for you to use toward books and supplies.
  • July 1 - If you are enrolled in classes that begin through June 24, then on or before July 1, balance refunds will be issued to your selected account.
  • If you are enrolled in a class beginning after this date, you can expect your refund on or before: July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, or July 29.

  • September 23 - If you are enrolled in classes that begin through Sept. 16, then on or before Sept. 23, balance refunds will be issued to your selected account. 
  • If you are enrolled in a class beginning after this date, (for example, in March) you can expect your refund on or before: Oct. 7, Oct. 21, Nov. 11, and Nov. 25.

After You Submit the FAFSA

Once you submit your FAFSA, you will get an email from San Jac about the status of your application. 

You may be chosen for a process called verification and need to submit additional information before your application can be processed.

The FA acknowledgment letter lets you know that your financial aid application has been downloaded by San Jac. There is an important section of the email labeled Requirements.

If the Requirements box is blank, it means you are good to go! Your file will be reviewed for satisfactory academic progress and, if eligible, awarded within the next five business days. 

If the Requirements box lists documents, it means your file has been selected for verification. Please read the list of requirements carefully and provide the documents quickly.

Many forms can be found on our Verification page. If you no longer have your email, you can log into your SOS account for a list of required documents.

 

If you receive an email asking about incomplete documents, don’t panic! This is common. It just means we have some questions about the documents you’ve submitted or we need additional information. 

The email will list instructions on what to do next. While many documents can be found on our Verification page, we may need more information than can be provided in a form. So please read your email carefully. You may need to call, email, or visit the financial aid office.

 

The Department of Education sets standards we must use to determine your financial aid eligibility. SAP has many requirements, including maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA.
If you have received an email about your status, please read it carefully or review your SAP status on SOS. If you fail to meet the SAP requirements, you will need to start an appeals process to regain financial aid eligibility.

You can check the status of the documents you submit. Just log into your SOS account. Document statuses are:

  • Received, Not Yet Reviewed - This means your document has been received and electronically forwarded to the office for processing. It has not yet been reviewed.
  • Satisfied - This means that the document has been reviewed and the requirement is satisfied.
  • Incomplete - This means that something you submitted is incomplete. You will need to speak with someone from the financial aid office about what is needed.
  • Temporary - This means that your file has been reviewed and has been sent back to the Department of Education for an update in their system. This is purely a system issue and does not impact the status of your application. You do not need to take any action.
