Texas Opportunity High School Diploma (OHSD) FAQs

The Texas Opportunity High School Diploma (often referred to as Opportunity High School Diploma or OHSD) is a new program offered in the State of Texas. Here are some commonly asked questions.

The Opportunity High School Diploma (OHSD) gives adult students in career and technical education programs at public community colleges a new way to earn a high school-equivalent diploma (similar to a GED).* Students earn their diploma at the same time that they earn a career degree or certificate. We have dozens of programs to choose from, so it's a great way to maximize your time.

The program is managed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in partnership with the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Workforce Commission.

*Texas Education Code establishes that the OHSD is equivalent to a high school diploma awarded by a public school district.

Unlike a GED, the OHSD is not focused on math, science, social studies and language arts. Instead, the diploma has five main areas of focus: civics, communication skills, quantitative reasoning, scientific reasoning, and workplace success skills.

When you're ready, we'll assess your level in each of these five areas. At the end of the program, we'll assess you again. If you are proficient in the five areas, we'll award you with the state diploma!

With this program, students may show documentation of previous learning. This might include:

  • Official high school grades

  • College credits

  • SAT or ACT results

  • Military service

  • Demonstrated success on assessments you take when you enroll

No. San Jacinto College is one of five colleges in Texas and is the only college in the Houston area offering it.

Adult students 18 or older on the date of first enrollment in the program. You'll also need to be enrolled in a career program at San Jac. We can help you get started with both the diploma and career program.
